the parade was led peacefully and with smiles by agents of the modern state
the local canadian police force and their cars came first
they tweeted the wrong start time but they led with order and sirens
then local politicians followed in convertibles
then local service clubs
then some dirty trucks cleaned up
then a truck driven by a man feeding a milk bottle to a baby
then came awwws from the people
then cars from dealerships and car culture
kinsmen came with their families walking
then came horses with poo bags attached – zero nature today – just civilization in celebration
many people walked after that with no affiliation – funny loving zombies
then – large gaps
spectators waiting patiently…
Then volunteers came to give ‘no smoking’ stickers to seniors and hard candy to little children
then local hockey team – bus emblazoned with open mouthed players
then flagship radio stations blasting shit and old paradigm
then old cloggers clogging and smiling
then fire trucks honking and horning
then an Uber
then many old whisky drinking lions club members waving slowly and knowingly
then the Old Shriners in shrine cars (dwindling in numbers)
then near the end came a clown – from McDonalds. The people were stoked with dead factory messages and freedom fries
I waved slowly at all this
We waived at each other
but it seemed the freedom cry was scripted on this july
and then some that protested this day but their voices were drowned in red and white flag waving and balloon flying
we all waved at each other
You be you and I’ll be me and we will be
In the bigger space
Princess CaroBon of Beechwood says
What an accurate account of a parade. “Sublime” comes to mind to describe the words of this poem. How many times I’ve been oblivious on the sidelines of such spectacles …smiling, waving, wasting precious time … nothing good but the odd hard candy tossed at my feet for me to pick up like a pigeon pecking a scrap of bread..
